As a mom, you want to give your children the best start possible—including healthy vision. At Cecil Family Eyecare, we believe good eyesight begins with early attention and proactive care. Whether your child is just learning to walk or heading off to school, knowing when to schedule eye exams is key to catching issues early.

Q: At what age should I start taking my children for eye exams?

We recommend a child’s first comprehensive eye exam at six months old, followed by exams at age 3 and again before they start school—around age 5 or 6. Early visits help detect any developmental issues in your child’s vision before they interfere with learning or development.

Q: How often do children need to have their eyes examined?

Once your child starts school, they should have an eye exam every one to two years, or more frequently if your optometrist recommends it.

Q: Is it necessary for my toddler to have an eye exam even if they can’t read yet?

Yes! Reading is not required. Our optometrists use child-friendly techniques and tools designed for preverbal children to assess eye health, alignment, and development.

Q: I wear glasses—does that mean my kids will likely need them too?

Genetics play a big role in vision. If you or your partner wear glasses, your child has a higher chance of needing them too. Routine exams help track changes early.

Q: Can too much screen time affect my child’s eyesight?

Absolutely. Digital devices can cause digital eye strain and may contribute to nearsightedness (myopia), especially with prolonged use. We’ll provide guidance on healthy screen habits during your visit.

Cecil Family Eyecare Tip: Our practice welcomes children of all ages and uses a calm, compassionate approach to make exams comfortable—even for the littlest patients.
